In what is shaping up to be the most fiercely contested segment of the digital camera market today, the compact, fixed-lens, point-and-shoot camera type is experiencing a resurgence.

Led by the likes of the uber-popular Fujifilm X100VI, the Leica D-Lux 8, the Ricoh GR III, and the new Canon PowerShot V1, to name a few, the point-and-shoot market is as hot as it's ever been.

Now, throwing even more fuel on this point-and-shoot revolution is Sony with the company’s recent announcement of the RX1R III digital camera. Compact and powerful, the Sony RX1R III checks off pretty much every box you can throw at it.

So, if you’re looking for the right point-and-shoot option to be your “always-there” camera for you travel and day-to-day life, let’s explore what the Sony RX1R III has to offer—and how you can make sure you have the right gear (like the right Atlas Ultra SD cards, for example) to get the most out of this awesome new cam.

Turn Memories into Art With the Sony RX1R III

The long-awaited third generation of Sony’s fixed-lens full-frame camera model is finally here. Featuring a higher-resolution 61MP BSI CMOS sensor, improved AF and video performance, an updated body design, a larger battery, and the same beloved ZEISS Sonnar T 35mm f/2 prime lens from past models, the Sony RX1R III aims to combine extreme image quality with a highly portable and durable size and build.

Powered by the same high-resolution sensor found in the a7R V and a7CR cameras, the RX1R III features a full-frame 61MP Exmor R BSI chip, along with BIONZ XR processing, which enables achieving incredible resolution, high clarity, low noise, and a wide 15-stop dynamic range.

This powerful sensor is also capable of producing some impressive image quality. Additionally, with a copper wiring layer that can dramatically improve data transmission speed, shooters will be able to capture 14-bit, 61MP stills with a native sensitivity range of ISO 100-32000.

Compact Video Recording Capabilities

Along with its photo capabilities, the Sony RX1R III is also set to be a rare point-and-shoot with high-end video specs. The RX1R III can record full-frame, 30fps 4K video in 10-bit 4:2:2 using the advanced XAVC S-I format, ensuring consistent performance and quality at bitrates of up to 300 Mb/s.

It can also capture video using S-Log3 and S-Gamut3.Cine Gamma Curves that will allow for more than 15 stops of dynamic range and increased post-production flexibility, including matching video from other Sony Cinema Line cameras.

Users can also create their own LUTs, and presets can be set to accurately monitor footage or preview a specific look during shooting, and can be applied to the camera's monitor, EVF, or HDMI output.

AI Processing Unit and AF Capabilities

There are really a million things to look at with the Sony RX1R III, but in addition to the sensor and processor, the RX1R III also boasts improved autofocus, thanks to intelligent subject tracking and recognition capabilities.

Additionally, real-time tracking benefits from AI-based subject recognition, which will aid in following moving subjects, making it particularly well-suited for sports and action scenes.

Also, Human pose estimation allows the camera to distinguish between multiple people and maintain focus on the targeted subject; even if someone crosses in front, the camera maintains focus on the key person.

The Right Gear for the Sony RX1R III

First off, the Sony RX1R III is set to feature the same lens as its predecessor, the ZEISS Sonnar T* 35mm f/2 prime lens —a fast, wide-angle prime well-suited to everyday shooting needs.

The RX1R III will also feature some helpful dedicated accessories, including a LHP-1 Lens Hood, an LCS-RXL Body Case, and a TG-2 Thumb Grip, all of which will enhance comfort and performance.

However, if you want to truly unlock the full capabilities of the Sony RX1R III, we recommend investing in OWC Atlas SD cards. Atlas Pro and Atlas Ultra SD cards offer high performance and high quality for advanced photography and video recording at your maximum camera settings. Even with the RX1R III's massive 60MP files, you'll never slow down as long as you've got Atlas on your side.
