What's Wrong With the Old L-Bracket?

Traditional L-brackets solve one problem well: they give a tripod-mounted camera an Arca-Swiss compatible mounting point on both its base and its side, so you can flip between landscape and portrait orientation without unscrewing anything from the tripod head. But that single-purpose design comes with tradeoffs. L-brackets are typically fixed in shape as one solid piece, can block battery doors or port covers, and don't do anything to help with the rest of your kit. What if you want to add a hand strap, or you need to bolt on a light or microphone? You could always go with a cage of some sort, but not everybody needs or wants the extra mounting points and bulk a cage adds all of the time.

That’s why modularity is at the heart of the Field Bracket design.

Fast Switching Between Vertical and Landscape

Like any good L-bracket, both the baseplate and the upright bracket of the Field Bracket are fully Arca-Swiss compatible, so both sides drop onto any compatible tripod head or clamp without an adapter.

But sets the Field Bracket apart is Peak Design's new tool-free Field Latch mechanism. This allows you to attach or remove the upright bracket in seconds and without needing a hex key. Plus, the mechanism even allows you to adjust the position (how far out the upright extends from the body of the camera) of the upright bracket to leave room for cables, port doors, or articulating screens.

And because the upright is removable, you can swap it out for one of the Field Bracket’s other accessory modules…

Cheese Plate and Hand Strap Support

Swap the upright out and you can now attach the Peak Design Cheese Plate instead, turning the camera into a lightweight video rig. The Cheese Plate adds 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 mounting points along with a cold shoe, giving shooters a place to mount a microphone, an LED light, or a small monitor without having to bolt on a cage.

For handheld shooting, Peak Design's optional Hand Strap attaches directly to the bracket, and the whole system still integrates with Peak Design's existing Capture clips and camera straps, plus third-party Arca-Swiss accessories. Peak Design says that regardless of which module is attached, a camera's ports and controls stay fully accessible.

It’s Got it’s Own Integrated AirTag!

The most novel piece of the system—and really the detail that lets you know this design was thoroughly considered—is the Beacon Finder Tag, which Peak Design describes as the first Bluetooth tracker designed specifically to fit inside an Arca-compatible camera plate. Rather than strapping a separate tracking tag like an AirTag to a bag or camera strap, the Beacon Finder Tag slides into an internal compartment built into the Field Bracket baseplate, staying completely hidden from the outside.

The tag works with both Apple's Find My network and Google's Find Hub network, so it's compatible regardless of whether you’re in the Apple or Google ecosystem. It carries an IP67 dust- and water-resistance rating and runs on a single CR2025 battery rated for roughly six months of use. (On the Fujifilm X100VI and Leica Q3 models, the tag attaches to the included upright adapter rather than the baseplate itself, but the tracking function works the same way.)

Camera Compatibility

At launch, camera-specific baseplates are available for:

• Canon: R5, R5 II, R6, R6 II, R6 III
• Nikon: Z5 II, Z6 II, Z6 III, Z7 II, Z8
• Sony: A1, A1 II, A7C II, A7CR, A7 IV, A7R IV, A7R V, A7S III, A7 V, A9 III
• Fujifilm: X-T5, X100VI
• Leica: Q3, Q3 Monochrom

The Fujifilm X100VI and Leica Q3 models are built a little differently: because those compact cameras lack a pronounced hand grip, Peak Design machines an integrated aluminum grip with a textured, non-slip surface directly into the baseplate as a single solid piece. Peak Design plans to add more camera-specific models over time based on customer requests. You can see a list of cameras that aren't currently supported at the Kickstarter page.

Pricing and Availability

Peak Design is offering two ways to back the campaign:

• Build Your Own: starting at $125, which includes the camera-specific Field Bracket itself, letting backers add accessories individually.
• The Whole Kit: priced at $199, which bundles the Field Bracket with the Beacon Finder Tag, Cheese Plate, and Hand Strap.

Kickstarter pricing is a discount off eventual retail: Peak Design has set the Field Bracket's standalone MSRP at $149.95, with individual accessories like the Beacon Finder Tag, Cheese Plate, and Hand Strap starting at $39.95 each at retail. Backing during the campaign is the only way to get the bundled Whole Kit pricing before the March 2027 retail launch.

As with any crowdfunding campaign, delivery dates and final specs can shift before launch, so anyone backing the project should do their own diligence on the Field Bracket Kickstarter page before pledging.
