RIP to a Mirrorless OG: The Canon EOS R5 Has Been Officially Discontinued
A controversial yet consequential Canon camera heads off into the sunset.

According to reports online, Canon is officially discontinuing the EOS R5, the company’s popular (if not polarizing) full-frame mirrorless camera that was one of the first of its kind to offer 8K video.
Originally announced in 2020, the Canon EOS R5 was the flagship camera at the center of the company’s shift from DSLR bodies to mirrorless. The R5 was also quite polarizing, as it represented both the best and the worst of this new body style, with ambitious specs but questionable functionality—at least when it was initially released.
Now, with an announcement of discontinuation, the EOS R5 can be looked back upon as an important camera in Canon’s history, and one that might sneakily be a great option for filmmakers, photographers, or hybrid creators looking for a discounted option to snag.
The Canon EOS R5 Legacy
Originally announced on July 9th, 2020, the EOS R5 was introduced alongside its sister EOS R6 camera, which offered lower resolutions but excelled in videography features and affordability.
Over five years after its release, the EOS R5 has become a competitive camera, featuring high-end specs, and now includes several firmware updates that have enhanced performance and helped it succeed.
The EOS R5 was among the first mirrorless cameras to offer 8K30p RAW video capture and 10-bit color video. It was a bit pricey at launch, but over the years, it has seen reductions, bringing its price to around $3,000, making it a solid option for those seeking such impressive specs, particularly for video.
What’s Next for the EOS R5?
As with any camera discontinuation, the Canon EOS R5 will not disappear overnight. This news indicates that Canon will discontinue production of new units. The number of units finishing production, in shipment to retailers, on shelves, and in homes will not change.
This means you’ll still be able to get the R5 at many retailers for some time, though discounts are likely to follow (in addition to the ones currently being offered). The resale market will likely remain strong, too, as the R5 boasts specs that really haven’t been beaten even today.
If you’re a current EOS R5 owner, you might want to note that you'll eventually want to move on. However, if you’re in the market for a high-quality, 8K video-capable camera, you might also want to note that this might be a nice bargain.
