The new Sigma 300-600mm f/4 DG OS Sports Lens is a sight to behold. Not just because it’s such a large and powerful lens, but more so for what you perhaps can’t see about this revolutionary new ultra-telephoto zoom.
Designed for sports, wildlife, action photography, and videography, this ultra-telephoto zoom from Sigma seeks to combine the brightness and optical performance of a smaller prime lens with the body of a highly versatile tele-zoom.
While obviously not for everyone, this new Sigma lens is an excellent option for shooters who need the high-performance range of an ultra-telephoto zoom. It will be a great option for L-mount and Sony E-mount shooters who want to capture beautiful moments in the outdoors and in the wild.
Is the Sigma 300-600 f/4 Really Worth $6,000?
So, the most important spec you need to know about this new 300-600 f/4 Sigma Sports Lens is its constant f/4 aperture throughout the zoom range. And while some may balk at the $6,000 Sigma is asking for this lens, there is some very important context.
A) This zoom range at that constant aperture is straight up impressive. This is a professional lens for very specific situations. $6,000 is fair in that context.
B) For Sony shooters, this lens at $6,000 is an absolute steal. For lenses that reach 600mm, before the Sigma 300-600, Sony shooters had two options: the fantastic but still optically inferior Sony 200-600 f/5.3-6.6 G OSS at $2,000, or the amazing but very costly Sony 600mm f/4 GM OSS at $13,000! Not only does this Sigma lens give you a similar zoom range as the 200-600, it also adds in constant f/4 aperture which is pretty dang fast for a super-telephoto like this.
C) For L-mount shooters, the algebra is a lot easier. There wasn't a 600mm super-telephoto option before this. Now there is, and it's a great deal.
Obviously we'd recommend waiting until our friends at PetaPixel review this lens before you plunk down 6 Gs, but based on the specs and what's been previously available, Sigma has hit a home run here.
This new 300-600mm lens will also feature advanced optical stabilization and AI-enhanced autofocus, which should help deliver the image quality of a prime lens with the expanded flexibility of a zoom.
The lens’ inner zoom mechanisms should further help ensure balanced handling. At the same time, a weather-sealed magnesium alloy body will provide extra durability in demanding environments like snow, rain, and extreme heat.
While photography might be its primary concern, the Sigma 300-600mm f/4 DG OS Sports Lens is also optimized for video. Its minimal focus breathing is a very nice added bonus for video and photo pros alike.
Customizable Handling and Filters
As with any ultra-telephoto zoom lens, the goal is to make these lenses as versatile as possible so content professionals can be ready for any shooting situation. To that end, the Sigma 300-600mm f/4 DG OS Sports Lens will offer multiple control options and a helpful drop-in filter holder for customizable, professional workflows.
This drop-in filter system will support 40.5mm ND and polarizing filters. The lens will also feature a function ring with built-in Focus Preset and Power Focus modes for controlled focus shifts.
The lens will also include Sigma’s new OS2 stabilization system that should further ensure shake-free shooting even at its longest 600mm length.
Price and Availability
The Sigma 300-600mm f/4 DG OS Sports Lens will be available in Sony E-mount and L-mount options. It will also be compatible with Sigma’s 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters, which can extend the focal range to 1200mm.
The lens also supports a Sigma USB Dock for firmware updates and customization, so you can keep your firmware up to date. Here are the full specs and a starting purchase price.
