If you’re looking to take your photography out of this world, at least in terms of subject matter, then you might want to check out this new OM System OM-3 ASTRO mirrorless camera.
Purpose-built specifically for astrophotography, the OM-3 ASTRO is a specialized Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera that features optical characteristics that will help you capture everything from red nebulae to constellations to other nighttime phenomena.
It’s also, you know, a nice mirrorless camera with regular photography and video capture too. Here’s what you need to know.
An Out of This World Camera
Designed by OM System, the OM-3 that this model builds upon is the company’s flagship mirrorless camera, proven to be highly capable across a wide range of photography and videography needs. The camera features a 20MP Stacked BSI Live MOS MFT sensor, TruePic X engine, and a nice array of photo and video features.
However, that’s not what this OM-3 ASTRO is here for. The OM-3 ASTRO is here to shoot high-quality astrophotography by capturing hydrogen-alpha wavelengths.
The OM-3 ASTRO features a unique IR-cut filter mounted in front of the sensor, allowing 100% transmission of Hα (hydrogen-alpha) wavelengths. This IR-cut filter enables the camera to record accurate details, shapes, and colors of diffuse nebulae and other celestial objects.
ASTRO Modes and Features
What really makes this OM-3 ASTRO so cool for astrophotographers really comes down to its custom modes and its array of astro-friendly features.
The OM-3 ASTRO comes preprogrammed with color settings that make it easy to start photographing astro scenes and starry landscapes right away.
The camera will also include additional helpful astro features, such as Starry Sky AF, Live Composite, a digital level, USB power delivery during shooting, and a Night View mode.
Price and Availability
The OM-3 ASTRO is priced as an upgraded version of the OM-3, with a $800 premium over the non-ASTRO base model. However, if you’re serious about astrophotography, you don’t often get an option this turnkey and ready for such a niche photography style.
