Like the rest of the video and content creation industry, the audio and sound design world is evolving at a rapid pace. And, as the audio world evolves, so does the need for more advanced and sophisticated solutions for working with higher-quality sounds.
That’s why it’s cool to see that Neumann, the German pro audio specialist company, has announced a new software solution specifically designed for Neumann headphones. Called RIME ( Reference Immersive Monitoring Environment), this technology is designed to help music producers, audio engineers, and film and video editors monitor immersive formats like Dolby Atmos.
Let’s look at this new Neumann RIME software and explore how it works.
Neumann RIME Software
Designed to work with Neumann’s sophisticated pro headphones, RIME aims to help editors monitor immersive formats in reference quality as well as provide an alternative when a multichannel loudspeaker setup is unavailable.
“Immersive audio is the new standard," explains Neumann CEO Yasmine Riechers. "Streaming services favor content that can be enjoyed in spatial audio formats such as Dolby Atmos or Sony 360 Reality. More and more DAWs now offer immersive audio capabilities, and engineers, producers, and musicians alike are eager to explore these new possibilities. Reliable monitoring is essential for this.”
The RIME software solution will also be a great option for engineers, producers, and editors looking to work with this high-quality immersive audio when on the go too.
An Immersive Audio Plug-in for All Major DAWs
Announced as a plug-in for all major DAWs on Mac and PC, this RIME software will ideally be used on the output or monitoring bus. It should further convert multichannel formats to binaural audio, retaining surround and height channel information, thus enabling users to monitor and mix content in formats such as Dolby Atmos using headphones.
The RIME software will further capture a real purpose-built studio room using reference-quality Neumann equipment throughout. Immersive setups of Neumann KH Line loudspeakers and subwoofers were installed by acoustics experts and fine-tuned using MA 1 automatic monitor alignment.
The three-dimensional sound field was captured using the legendary KU 100 binaural head microphone connected to Neumann’s acclaimed MT 48 audio interface featuring cutting-edge preamp and converter technology. This state-of-the-art setup should provide a nice option for preserving pristine sound quality throughout the entire signal chain.
Price and Availability
RIME is a unique product and a great example of how the audio community is always seeking innovation and new software solutions. RIME will very much make immersive audio more accessible and easy to handle.
If you’d like to try out RIME yourself, it’s available on Neumann’s website here, where users can access a free 14-day trial before reviewing prices that start at $99.95.
