Other World Computing, a leading provider of products and services for the Macintosh marketplace, has changed the name of Unsupported UtilityXTM to XpOSfactoTM.

In addition, OWC today released version 2.11 of XpOSfacto, OWC’s software application that allows Mac OS X to operate on select pre-G3 Macintosh computers. The utility can be downloaded free of charge by visiting

“XpOSfacto continues to be recognized as one of the leading utilities in the Mac industry,” said Larry O’Connor, president of Other World Computing. “At Macworld San Francisco, the product was selected as a finalist for the 17th Annual Macworld Editors’ Choice Award for the Best System Utility, which is truly a credit to Ryan’s abilities. We are excited with the response from consumers and pleased to have Ryan as part of the OWC team.”

The key new feature in v2.11 is support for a wider range of SCSI CD-ROM devices, including CD-R and CD-RW devices. There is also support for burning custom Mac OS X install CDs. XpOSfacto helps the following Macintosh computers run Mac OS X:

  • 7300, 7500, 7600, 8500, 8600, 9500, 9600, and
  • Selected clones (Umax S900 and J700; and Power Computing PowerWave and PowerTowerPro).

“Other World Computing continues to provide resources to help me develop utilities to address unsupported Macintosh systems,” said Rempel, developer of XpOSfacto.“We have been able to help thousands of users with XpOSfacto, and anticipate as technology progresses, we will be able to support many more.”

XpOSfacto v2.11 also fixes a problem reading the catalogs of highly fragmented hard drives and fixes a previous incompatibility issue with NoFinderZoom9. In addition, the utility now provides user feedback when preparing custom install CDs and solves a problem booting from custom install CDs.
